President Biden and Senators considering national expansion of “expedited removal” fast-track deportations without due process

WASHINGTONThe bipartisan American Business Immigration Coalition Action (ABIC Action) issued the following statement in response to President Biden and Senate negotiators’ consideration of the national expansion of a fast-track deportation process known as “expedited removal.”

This increased interior enforcement — absent a path to legal status and work permits — would put millions of long-term immigrant workers settled throughout the United States at risk of immediate deportation. This would cause a drastic decline in workers, harming families, businesses and consumers already hammered by inflation.

“Pouring gasoline on a devastating labor shortage is not the answer. The chilling effect of a national deportation program on long-term workers would devastate businesses and worsen inflation,” stated Rebecca Shi, executive director of ABIC Action, a bipartisan coalition of over 1,400 diverse businesses and business associations. “The solution is expansion of work permits for long-term immigrants and not fueling an economic crisis that would hurt employers and American families.”

Background

American Farm Bureau: “Increasing immigration enforcement without also reforming our worker visa program could cost America $70 billion in agricultural production.”

National Association of Manufacturers: “Immigration reform is essential to our competitiveness worldwide. We need a system that provides certainty for our businesses and dedicated employees, ensures national security, offers compassion and is consistent with our values and our history as a nation of immigrants.”
