The Texas Dream Act was approved by a Republican legislature and signed into law by Governor Rick Perry and continued under Governor Greg Abbott. Since 2001, Texas has allowed immigrant students to pay the same college tuition rate as their peers.\u00a0In 2021 alone, Dreamers paid $<a href=\"https:\/\/everytexan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Texas-Dream-Act-fact-sheet-May2023.pdf\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/everytexan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Texas-Dream-Act-fact-sheet-May2023.pdf&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1746726135477000&amp;usg=AOvVaw22x1zsxdml6eEoP9Cr0Ibx\">81.6 million<\/a>\u00a0in tuition, supporting our local economy. Dreamers make up 9% of our workforce and contributed $<a href=\"https:\/\/map.americanimmigrationcouncil.org\/locations\/texas\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/map.americanimmigrationcouncil.org\/locations\/texas\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1746726135477000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0qp0y5rDDLAAwstS9so3RQ\">5.4 billion<\/a>\u00a0in taxes last year. The Texas Dream Act fuels our economy, generating $33 billion in earnings.\u00a0Many of these students actively contribute to their local economy and communities \u2014 and research indicates that if the Texas Dream Act is repealed, Texas will l<a href=\"https:\/\/immigrationimpact.com\/2025\/03\/04\/texas-dream-act-undocumented-students-higher-education\/#:~:text=The%20Economic%20Consequences%20of%20Repeal&amp;text=Research%20by%20the%20Council%20indicates,million%20in%20diminished%20spending%20power.\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/immigrationimpact.com\/2025\/03\/04\/texas-dream-act-undocumented-students-higher-education\/%23:~:text%3DThe%2520Economic%2520Consequences%2520of%2520Repeal%26text%3DResearch%2520by%2520the%2520Council%2520indicates,million%2520in%2520diminished%2520spending%2520power.&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1746726135477000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3_i1S9gW-9wsNuvRph3Q22\">ose more than $461 million annually in economic activity<\/a>, including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org\/sites\/default\/files\/research\/20230320_factsheet_tx_instatetuition_2023.pdf\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org\/sites\/default\/files\/research\/20230320_factsheet_tx_instatetuition_2023.pdf&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1746726135477000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3lMXBZ_ioW7hiHg0GqS2Cd\">$244.4 million in lost wages and $216.9 million<\/a>\u00a0in diminished spending power.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>ABIC Action and local leaders released the following statements in response:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDreamers are Texans\u2014nurses, teachers, and engineers. They are our neighbors, our classmates, and the future of our workforce. As co-chairman of Comit\u00e9100, I urge lawmakers to keep the Texas Dream Act alive. These are current Texas students who have been admitted to our universities based on their hard work and merit\u2014not just their dreams. This policy has worked for over 20 years, helping Texas generate an additional $28.5 billion in economic activity. Repealing it would cost the state $461 million each year in lost wages and economic contributions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plus over 70% of Texans agree: Dreamers belong here. They are vital to our communities and to Texas\u2019 continued prosperity,\u201d said\u00a0<strong>Massey Villarreal, Comite100 Co-Chairman\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen President Trump\u00a0 acknowledged the contributions of Dreamers to our country, as a Dreamer, it gave me hope. President Trump said he wanted a solution for Dreamers, and we are ready to be part of it.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fwd.us\/news\/dreamers-by-the-numbers\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.fwd.us\/news\/dreamers-by-the-numbers\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1746726135477000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3D3YDGpiyrScCiC8Eq7wG6\">Nearly 750,000 children who are U.S. citizens have a Dreamer parent<\/a>, and one in ten Dreamers is married to a U.S. citizen. When Dreamers have access to education, we all benefit. By supporting opportunities like in-state tuition, we\u2019re not just empowering Dreamers; we\u2019re strengthening the very foundation of Texas\u2019 future,\u201d\u00a0<strong>said Emiliano Valencia, ABIC Texas Deputy Director.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDreamers play an integral role in our community. These individuals grew up alongside our own children, attending our schools and later contributing to our economy. Repealing in-state tuition for these Dreamers would have significant impacts \u2014 resulting in a loss of $461 million in total economic activity. President Trump has called these Dreamers \u2018incredible kids\u2019 and expressed the desire to find a solution so they can keep contributing to our country. It also makes it harder for them to contribute to our state\u2019s economy, workforce and future. DACA-eligible residents have a total spending power of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.higheredimmigrationportal.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/DACA-Stats-for-Info-Sheet-1-2.pdf\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.higheredimmigrationportal.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/DACA-Stats-for-Info-Sheet-1-2.pdf&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1746726135477000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0pLYEWRHbzA6GwGb_yarXq\">nearly $24 billion<\/a>\u00a0nationwide, contributing<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bestcolleges.com\/resources\/daca-student-taxes\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.bestcolleges.com\/resources\/daca-student-taxes\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1746726135477000&amp;usg=AOvVaw334rMg6Tt_5AGQpseKzM54\">\u00a0$6.2 billion in federal taxes and $3.3 billion in state and local taxes.\u00a0<\/a>Policies that support Dreamers\u2019 education can lead to higher earnings and increased tax contributions, further fueling our economy.
