With the border secure, a growing bipartisan coalition calls on Congress to stop treating immigration as a political football and start delivering solutions that serve the interest of Americans<\/i><\/p>\n

WASHINGTON, D.C., April 22, 2026\u00a0\u2014<\/strong> Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ), Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R-FL), Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE), and Rep. Jake Auchincloss (D-MA) joined veterans, mixed-status families, farmers, faith leaders, and employers at the U.S. Capitol today to demand that Congress take the next step in securing a solution that will provide work permits for the long term, law abiding, critical immigrant workforce supporting industries from agriculture, to senior care, to hospitality. Organized by the American Business Immigration Coalition Action (ABIC Action), the coalition called on Congress to advance pending bipartisan proposals, including the Dignity Act (H.R. 4393), the DREAM Act, the American Families United Act, and Haitian TPS legislation. Speakers argued that inaction is driving up costs, destabilizing communities and families, and leaving American businesses without the workforce they need.<\/p>\n

Undocumented workers currently contribute $59.4 billion in federal taxes every year, furthermore, there are more than 1.1 million U.S. citizens in mixed status marriages. The pending bipartisan proposals before Congress address this directly: commonsense solutions that are fully paid for, reduce the national debt, and create pathways for American workers to be retrained and upskilled. Latino voters, the swing bloc with a 10-15% crossover capable of reshaping more than two dozen competitive districts across ten states, are also demanding real solutions, not rhetoric.<\/p>\n

Today’s fly-in is the latest event in the Dignity Tour, launched in March 2026 and now spanning Pennsylvania, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, and other key states. The coalition includes the American Legion, the National Association of Manufacturers, the National Association of Home Builders, the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, and more than 75 other business, faith, and civic organizations.<\/p>\n

The event followed the launch of ABIC Action-aligned\u00a0Building America’s Economy PAC<\/a>, which announced $1.2 million raised to protect lawmakers on both sides of the aisle who support commonsense immigration reform. Building America’s Economy PAC launched as a direct response to a coordinated campaign by extreme-right influencers to primary every Republican cosponsor of bipartisan immigration legislation. The PAC will prioritize support for members facing active primary challenges triggered by their immigration votes, with a focus on primary elections.<\/p>\n

\u201cWork permits for long-term immigrants leveled the playing field for American workers by bringing all workers under the same set of rules, preventing bad-faith employers from undercutting American workers with an unregulated workforce. Work permits for long-term immigrants lower costs\u2026We want solutions. And Hispanic voters are extremely clear. To win, both parties must embrace work permits and legal status for long-term, law-abiding immigrant contributors.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) \u2013 Veteran:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThere are thousands of people across the country, like Maria and Annie, with no criminal record, who pay taxes, who contribute, being held in ICE detention right now, facing deportation to countries that they do not know. I mean, these folks are as American as my own two kids. In what world does it make sense to focus time and resources chasing down and holding people like them rather than chasing down criminals. This is their home. The contributions they make to our communities make our economy and our country stronger. They know that. We all know that. It takes some courage to change the law of our countries to reflect that. Hey, America, we are a nation of immigrants. We’re also a nation of laws, and we’re fully capable of honoring both. We can build an immigration system where people like Maria and Annie have a pathway to staying here without the constant fear of detention and deportation. That kind of progress will take a bipartisan effort, but it is absolutely within reach, and it is absolutely worth fighting for.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Dignity Act is the only vehicle right now in Congress, it’s the only, in the United States Congress and Senate, the only piece of legislation that could give some type of response, some type of answer, some type of solution to what has been a 40-year problem\u2026If we want to continue being the number one military in the world, we need to continue being the number one economy in the world. And if we do not have hands to make that economy grow, I’m not sure how we’re going to do that. So it’s the veterans, it’s the mixed families, it’s the agricultural, construction, hospitality [workers], it’s everything. So dignity is not an immigration legislation. Dignity is an economic and national security legislation. We’ll cover and protect every single American, regardless of their political affiliation. And I thank ABIC [Action] for putting this together and we’ll continue fighting for people like us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIndividuals need to know that they can take their kids to school, that they can go to work, that they can go to church, that they can go to the hospital without living in fear. Because if being American, if living in America means anything, it means that you should be free from fear, fundamentally. So I’m a co-leader of the Dignity Act this Congress. I was a co-leader of the Dignity Act last Congress because I want to demonstrate to the American public that we can solve problems in Congress and that we can solve the hardest problem of all, which is immigration reform. \u201c<\/p>\n

\u201cWithout immigration, we have a 1.7 birth rate. That means we have a declining workforce, we have an aging workforce, less people working to pay for people on social security, and Medicare. You can’t grow your companies. It’s bad for America. It’s just bad. Economics 101, right? We’re going after decency that Americans expect but we’re also doing what’s smart for this country, and I think this bill [the Dignity Act] balances that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Dignity Act provides a guaranteed path to naturalization for foreign-born service members, one like myself. Within one year of enlistment, that is not just a policy. It is a fulfilled promise. The Dignity Act streamlines sections 328 and 329 of the Immigration and Nationality Act, creating a uniform military naturalization regardless of peacetime or wartime. Our nation makes a commitment and an investment in our service members and their families at enlistment. And really, at its core, it’s about protecting the investment our nation makes in its service members. It is about forced retention. It is about readiness and national security.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI’m a United States citizen. I’m a public school teacher. I’m a mother. And instead of being with my students, I’m here because my husband of 24 years is sitting in a detention facility in Louisiana. And I’m standing here in front of you, the nation’s capital, and I’m begging, I’m begging for his release. Carlos has lived in this country, my country, for almost 30 years\u2026He’s paid taxes every year. He’s kept every paycheck stub. I have them. I know I scanned these to our lawyers. He’s never taken a single government benefit ever, ever. And he’s got no criminal record. My husband is not a criminal. He just lacks status\u2026The Dignity Act provides that. creates a legal process for families like mine. American families shouldn’t have to choose between the country we love and their spouse. American children should not lose a parent or both. And that’s not a border security issue. This is family destruction. I’m living it. I’m not, I’m witnessing it.\u201d<\/p>\n

So right now we need a program that provides legal status for those who are currently here working hard to supply that food to the country, as well as an access to a future workforce program and visas for them as well.\u201d<\/p>\n
